Backpacking through a backpacker

A lot of people go on a back packing trip around the world, but there is an other under rated way of backpacking and that is backpacking through a backpackers lodge. I have personally tried the latest version of backpacking here in Windhoek, Namibia.. And Its actually quite fun. While I'm busy working and putting a plan together, I travel from the Zebra room to the Aarwark room, the lion room, the buffalo room and now it looks like I have hit my final destination in the Elephant room at Chameleon Backpackers. The Buffalo and the elephant are so far my best destinations. Big, spacious, with a balcony and a good bed..and best of all its cheap ;) This Backpackers is also a very eco-friendly destination with a good focus on the saving of water and recycling. Strap on your backpack and go backpacking in a backpackers, where all your destinations are within walking distance;)

Help I courired myself!

courier delivers messages, packages, and mail, and the other day also me! Couriers are distinguished from ordinary mail services by features such as speed, security, tracking, signature, specialization and individualization of express services, and swift delivery times, which are optional for most everyday mail services. As a premium service, couriers are usually more expensive than usual mail services, and their use is typically restricted to packages where one or more of these features are considered important enough to warrant the cost. I was one of the packages without warranty and "deliver and you get you money back" kind of deals. I was the cheapest way of traveling and me and my buddy reached our destination! Luckily I got the front seat on top of a package, and for a tall girl that means hugging the roof for a long few hours. The rest of the passengers where packed like sardines between mountains of packages in the back of the van. The trip consisted of 3 engine stops, 4 load checks, 5 fresh air breaks for the guys in the back of the van, and 1 sudden : Holy shit! Did you see that massive kudu antelope crossing? Oh and i forgot the six elbows i  had to shoot out to keep the driver awake. It is like they say: A courier service is a premium service, its, fast, shaky, tight, with swift delivery times and it sure beats your average bus or taxi transport. I got courired and it was awesome!

The capture Trend

1 2 3 and smile!!! and click... Most people today owns camera of some kind, either the real thing or a cellphone device and we are all running around trying to capture something. And when we do capture, we hold in a holing device and then we release or reintroduce our capturing of the day either on Instagram or Facebook or maybe even a blog. Now my question is: What is it that we are so desperate to capture? Are we scared that everything that is now might disappear very soon? Like one fashion season is exchanged with the next one. And if this is the case why are we only taking pictures of all the beautiful things, and not trying to put our heads& images together and start to conserve all the fading shades before they are all gone? you will only find a limited amount of filters on instagram, and if the green is gone then even that app is going to struggle to make your photo look awesome !
Just something to think about before we all go out and start out daily photo capture and release project.

An old witness is struck

The Baobab is called the Tree of Life with good reason. It is capable of providing shelter, food and water for the animal and human inhabitants of the African Savannah regions. The cork-like bark is fire resistant and is used for cloth and rope. The leaves are used for condiments and medicines. The fruit, called "monkey bread", is rich in vitamin C and is eaten. The tree is capable of storing hundreds of liters of water. At around 20 metres tall, the Baobab tree towers majestically over its neighbors on the African savannas. But today we are finding very few or in certain areas no young Baobab trees. And scientist are trying to figure out why! In areas like Kruger where they rotate which waterholes are filled up, scientist have noticed elephant demolishing the Baobob trees just to get to the inner water of the tree, they also wonder if the groundwater levels have dried out so much that it makes it impossible for trees like these to grow. But then again, what about the areas that do have a lot of ground water. This is the Holboom tree of Bushmanland, one of the oldest trees in Namibia. It was recently struck by lighting, and by that one more old witness is lost. These trees are the witnesses of everything that was and is, they have seen animals and humans evolve and disappear, and they have seen nature grow and shrink. lets remember to appreciate and protect, the growing wonders of the world while they are still here. Maybe these trees decided that they do not wish to witness any longer how we as man are destroying nature.? well at least what we can to is :Don't just witness them disappear!

Fierce Flamingos

The fierce flamingos have entered the pans of Namibia. It is their annual gathering to celebrate their own little pre-party of the rainy season. By pre-party I mean: they chill out a little bit to gather their strength for what their main goal is by moving into these pans, and that is breeding!
The flamingo's most characteristic habitats are large alkaline or saline lakes or estuarine lagoons that usually lack vegetation. Lakes may be far inland or near the sea. And even though flamingos are not characteristically a migratory specie, the pans of the North eastern part of Namibia fills up with these pink flamingo clouds.

I'm quite a tomboy, and I never wear a lot of pink, but I sure love it when you can walk through the bush and just see the purest of pink.
The flamingos anyway look better in pink then me;)

Sun-tastic

When we read about the sun or hear people talk about the sun, it is often in a context of how damaging and cancer provoking the sun is. Well, do not be fooled. The Sun is the prime source of the energy that we get from the food that we eat. Remember the food chain system that we have learned from Biology class? The Sun provides energy and photosynthesis that is needed for plants to grow. Sunlight is the best and only natural source of vitamin D.associated only with its role in bone formation, is actually active throughout the human body, powerfully influencing immune system responses and cell defences.
In Greek culture, the Sun was named Helios and represented a human form.
The Sun played a very important part in the lives of the ancient Egyptians as well. In the earliest times, it was feared and dreaded because of its mysteriousness. The continuous rising and setting of the Sun was also looked upon as representing the cyclical nature of life.
Without the sun we could say bye bye to the trend of sunglasses and sun bleached colored fashion such as the new brand (above) for SS13 TOME. So remember that the one, cannot exist without the other. What is fashion without the natural world? What are we without the sun? What could grow without the sun? We would not exist without the sun. so stop swearing at it, be inspired by it. With moderation off course;)

Shaded inspiration

In the fashion fracas for the most dominant color, the victor came out black and blue, the biggest color trend combination this fall. This trend was seen in almost every show at the fall 2012 New York Fashion Week. But we also see a repedative countershading occurring every fashion season. Either its shades of grey, shades of brown or shades of pastel or neon colors.
Now where does this inspiration come from? Could it maybe be that the fashion animals from the pavement jungle got inspiration from the real animal kingdom?
Animals use countershading as a form of camouflage. It creates an optical illusion that occurs when the coloration of the upper parts of an animal is darker than it's undersides. Hence the effect of sunlight is counteracted. The normal casting of a shadow on the ground is distorted and the animal is not given away by its shadow. In the case of the impala antelope the countershading make an impala, standing still with its side facing the predator, look as something 2 dimentional ( not a real object, but somewhat of a poster effect)
In the case of the great white shark, the dark upper side will blend in with the dark of the bottom of the sea, whilst the lighter underparts will blend in with the light coming from the surface, which makes the shark almost impossible to see from top and bottom. Obviously this only works when you are quite far away from the shark.
Thank the animals for the countershaded trends!

A fun surprise

A friend of mine made me aware of one little fun fact today. Hey Aleks? is it not you that is opening the movie about Bill Cunningham. And indeed it was me! Shows you how genius Bill Cunningham really is with sneak shooting people and their outfits in the streets of NYC.

The road towards conservation

How would you treat the earth? If you could live forever?
Would you make the same decisions that you make today?
Would you be the change? or close your eyes?
When do you choose to see?

Keep the date 2 track yourself down

Velkommen til foredrag: PÅ SPORET AV DET ENKLE LIV& VEIEN TIL SEG SELV,
på Litteraturhuset i Oslo den 16 Oktober kl 19.00

Tracking is like dancing, my body feels happy and connected.- San People

Let's go Tracking!

The Baby Architect

When we are young and small
we think we know nothing at all
We act without confusion
We have no clear line between what is real or
illusion
We think it is our surroundings that is the guide
that shape us
& decide
We have no perception
we know nothing of deception
We act with out confusion
we know what we want
what we like and hate
what tastes good or bad
there is no wrong
there is no right
we smile when we are free
and cry when we are sad
As kids we are the unofficial architects
of our own life
it is the I in individual that exists
not somebodies child, husband or wife.
When we grow up we think this all disappears
but we are wrong
we might not be childlike and light as a feather
but we are still architects
of our own
life and weather.

Jurassic rocks

I'm pretty sure that the Saturday night fever movie got their inspiration from crocodiles when they choose the song STAYIN' ALIVE.
The crocodile’s ancestry dates back 200 million years, the crocodile, as we know it today, first evolved about 80 million years ago. According to the fossil record, their body plan has changed little since, enabling them to outlive the dinosaurs and become the most advanced of all reptiles and the most successful freshwater predator. One of the keys to the crocs survival is something one might think of as primitive: cold-bloodedness. Like all reptiles, crocs are ectotherms, which means they must gather heat from their environment. Crocodiles have developed behaviors to control their body thermostat: they bask in the sun when cool and seek shade or water when hot. Ectotherms like crocs don’t need to eat regularly to warm their bodies, and so they save an enormous amount of energy that can be put to other use or stored for later.
Amazing right? Maybe we should all think about this, next time we consider buying a croc skin handbag! And then buy a fake croc skin bag instead;)

Black & White

Black or white
Good or Bad
I wonder sometimes. What if we only had the possibility to see in black and white? What if we saw no color? Would we then be so obsessed with defining and separating the one from the other, or would we start seeing everything as a whole? Would we then become either or? or would we become everything and see everything as a part of ourselves.
Lions cannot percieve any color. The eyes are proportionally larger than in comparable-sized animals and have round pupils.
A reflective coating at the back of the eye reflects even moonlight, making their eyes appear to glow red in the dark. The coating gives lions sight eight times better than a human at night. A white circle below the eye helps reflect light into the eyes.
Lions have round pupils instead of vertical slits, as are found in domestic cats. The vertical slits make an animal better able to focus sharply on small prey for example. They do not see color but maybe they see things a bit clearer then us after all?

Back from the bush

And I'm back from my bush adventure. An adventure towards new beginnings, an adventure towards conservation of the untouched, and the adventure of creating. I have listened to silence, I have felt the vibrations of the wind, I have seen the fight between winter and summer, I have seen the elephants move across the ground like a drummer. I have felt small, I have felt tall, I have felt the sand burn through my sole. But most of all I have felt at peace and apart of something whole.

Support the city animals

The Giraffe is a highly specialized animal
· Giraffe have 7 neck vertebras, the same as all other mammals. For an adult each vertebra can be as long a 1 foot in length.
·When running they are capable of reaching speeds of up to 55km/hour.
·Just like humans, giraffe have 32 teeth in total

Their tongue which can vary in length from 45-53 cm helps them pluck tasty morsels from thorny branches.
and etc and etc.
So off course when i encountered this street musician, then I had to assume that this guy too must be a specialized guy since he had chosen to dress up as a giraffe. And he was.. He could play the drums, the guitar, the harmonica, walk and sing all at the same time. So please guys! When encountering these rare species in the city you must give them of your time. They are after all not spotted everyday!

Hippo-nitized

We always want what we can't have
We always want what we don't have
We miss what is no longer
when we are weak, we envy the stronger
We search for something
when we have nothing
We shout
when no one can hear us
We get bored
we dream of becoming king or lord.
we waste
we regret
we recreate
But what about sustaining what is now
Before it is too late.
If you miss nature, animals and the touch of toes on sand
and you find comfort in a hippo made of chocolate
and a monkey made of something iced
Then its time to take stand
Cause we have all been hypnotized.
