I had walk outside to get more firewood for the fireplace, in my pajamas, and maaaaan that was cold. Minus 20 degrees Celsius. Holymoly macaroni. And I could not help but ask myself:
who was crazy enough to be the first man/woman to settle in this loony cold country. I mean how could it have made sense in someones head to say: - Oh well I can't feel my hands or toes, but lets live here!
The first people arrived in Norway after 7,000 BC when rising temperatures after the end of the last ice age made the country habitable, but hey lets get real I was not exactly tropical here. The first Norwegians lived by hunting (elk, deer, seal and whales) and by fishing.
After 3,000 BC farming was introduced into Norway.
During the 9th century Vikings from Norway raided Scotland, England, Ireland and France. They even raided as far south as Spain. But the Norwegians were not just raiders. They settled in the Hebrides (islands west of Scotland). And the Shetland and Orkney islands. Norwegians also settled the Isle of Man (between England and Ireland). I mean It was that times charter holiday. Lets do anything to escape Norways cold climate.
No wonder the Vikings that stayed behind drank so much, this way they maybe forgot about how cold it was.
But I think one thing we forget in a time of being cold, where everything seems hopeless and your body feels like and ice cube, and that is that how would we know what cold was I we never experienced warm. And even though we are cold on the outside, we are still warm on the inside. So we are not cold, we are both! Maybe that thought will warm you up.
